The Purple States Framework

Based on research by Greg Albers and the Rutchick et al. (2009) study on electoral map visualization. The Purple States framework recognizes that binary red/blue maps distort political reality — every state contains multitudes.

Deep Purple States (Maximum Uncertainty)

These states are pulsing at the edge of the political knife — where the purple is deepest, the margins thinnest, and democracy’s breath most audible.

California
55D / 45R → Split Primary Chaos
Two Republicans leading governor’s race. Democrats at 60% electorate but fracturing across 4+ candidates. The “blue fortress” is hemorrhaging into plum. Che Ahn barred from primary over tax returns. Deep purple emergency.
Wisconsin
50/50 Dead Even
GOP Majority Leader retiring. Democratic optimism surging. Labeled most flippable chamber in America. The purple here is electric — every vote a lightning strike.
Pennsylvania
48D / 52R (Leaning R)
MAGA strongholds in swing districts remain solid for Trump despite Iran war and gas prices. But suburbs showing lavender bruising — softening at the edges.
Maine
51D / 49R
Susan Collins territory. The independent Republican archetype — can she survive the Trump undertow? Purple deepened by ranked-choice voting complexity.
North Carolina
49D / 51R
Senate seat competitive. Democrats eyeing pickup. Purple battleground heating up with demographic shifts in suburban corridors.
Nevada
52D / 48R
80% oppose Trump’s “nationalize elections” push — even 61% of Republicans. Independent voter training active. Strong nonprofit journalism presence.

Ballot Access Battles

The frontlines of political innovation — where the duopoly’s defenses are tested, and alternative voices fight for a place on the ballot.

Alaska “Alaskan Party” forming from AIP ashes Splinter Energy — Former AIP activists creating new vehicle

Geographic Ballot Access Intelligence

Where the doors are open, where they’re locked, and where the keys are being forged.

Deep South
Most Restrictive
Highest barriers to entry. Signature requirements punitive. Nearly impossible for 3rd parties to maintain ballot access cycle-to-cycle.
Alaska
5 Independent Legislators
Most indie legislators per capita. Ranked-choice voting creates fertile ground. Alaskan Party forming from dissolved AIP — new energy emerging.
Vermont
Bernie Sanders Territory
Independent senator redefining what’s possible. Strong progressive indie infrastructure. Ballot fusion laws allow cross-endorsements.

About This Dashboard

The Purple Pulse Dashboard is a living document — an attempt to see American politics as it actually is, not as the networks render it. Every state contains multitudes. Every voter exists on a gradient. The red/blue binary is a distortion; the purple is the truth.

Methodology: Data aggregated from Ballot Access News, Ballotpedia, Nevada Independent, Capitol Fax, Democracy Now, Mondoweiss, Christian Science Monitor, DW News, and other independent sources. Gradient calculations based on 2024 electoral data and current 2026 polling where available.

Limitations: This dashboard reflects the state of play as of March 24, 2026. Political landscapes shift rapidly. Always verify with primary sources. The “purple” gradient is a metaphor for complexity, not a precise mathematical measurement.
